Josh Heupel had a historic run with the Tennessee Volunteers this season. He helped them make their first college football playoff appearance in history after a Week 14 victory over Vanderbilt. However, the Vols lost 42-17 to Ohio State in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday, bringing an end to their season.
The Ohio State Buckeyes dominated the game against the Tennessee Volunteers and are now scheduled to take on the undefeated Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl college football playoff quarterfinals.
After the game, ex-NFL star Will Compton posted a tweet, taking a subtle jab at Josh Heupel and his team. Compton wrote that it was definitely shocking that an SEC team had the worst first-round loss so far in the playoffs.
"We going to talk about how the 10-2 SEC team had the worst loss of the weekend?
Fans took to social media to troll and criticize Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Volunteers for losing to Ohio State. One fan said it was an embarrassing moment for the Vols as a program.
"It was embarrassing. Total mismatch"
"I wish they would have lost by 90. F**k Tennessee," one fan said.
"Tenn is known for choking. They are literally the Penn State of the SEC," another fan said.
Another fan felt that the Buckeyes were the best team so far in the first round of the playoffs.
"Be honest dude- Ohio was the best team that played this weekend..."
"The SEC is simply not built to go against the big dogs this year ND bouncing Georgia fs, Skattebo and the Sun Devils might even knock off Texas," one fan said.
"UT got curb stomped. If you told me they didn't watch 1s of film I'd believe you," another fan said.
Josh Heupel disappointed with playoff loss to Ohio State
In the post-game press conference, Heupel expressed his disappointment with Tennessee's loss to Ohio State in the playoffs. He also expressed his gratitude to the Tennessee fans who traveled to Columbus to watch the game live.
Josh Heupel also said that it was sad to see all the work they put in throughout the year come to an end.
"First. Just want to thank our fans," Heupel said. "I don't know what the actual number was that showed up, but there was a bunch of orange that decided to make the trip. Apprciate them. Disappointed for them. Disappointed for our team and everything that we have put into it since January, that we didn't coach and play better in this one early."
Ohio State will now take on the undefeated Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl game on Jan. 1.
