Kalen DeBoer addressed the possibility of former President Donald Trump attending the highly anticipated Alabama vs. Georgia game in Tuscaloosa this weekend.
Trump, the Republican presidential nominee for the third time, may make an appearance at Bryant-Denny Stadium, adding even more buzz to a matchup that's already set to dominate the college football world.
"I’m sure there’s gonna be a lot of celebrity-type people here – people that want to come be a part of what’s happening on gameday," DeBoer said, via AL.com. "Everyone’s watching. It’ll be great to have everyone who wants to come watch be here.”
The University of Alabama also confirmed they were notified of Trump's planned visit, emphasizing that safety is a top priority. UAPD will work with the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies to ensure smooth coordination.
"But yeah, it is kinda cool we have a lot of people who want to come be a part of the atmosphere and add to the excitement and energy the game will bring," he said.
While DeBoer acknowledged the extra attention, his focus remains on the players:
“I told the guys this, with ‘Gameday’ and everything coming here as well, for the guys, try to take as much off of their plate other than maybe a few extra interviews toward the end of the week,” he said.
Alabama is preparing to play the best game of the season — even the best of their careers. That’s “what we can control,” Bama coach said.
Kalen DeBoer to tackle conference play in his first Alabama season
Alabama's first conference test under head coach Kalen DeBoer will be against No. 1 Georgia on Saturday. It's the beginning of a difficult stretch, with five games against teams ranked among the top 18 in the Week 5 US LBM Coaches Poll.
Three of those games, including battles with Tennessee, LSU, and Oklahoma, are on the road.
DeBoer is well aware of the challenge.
“It’s ‘Welcome to the SEC,’ right? But it’s going to happen to us, right?” DeBoer said [H/t Tuscaloosa News]. “There’s going to be a lot of great teams that we’re going to face.”
Many on DeBoer’s coaching staff are new to the SEC, including co-offensive coordinator JaMarcus Shephard and offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic, both of whom joined from Washington.
Alabama and Georgia will face off at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC this Saturday, setting the stage for an exciting conference run.
