In a bit of a shock move, ESPN college football commentator and analyst Kirk Herbstreit’s son, Chase, has committed to join the Michigan Wolverines. The school announced the news on an X post on Monday, and fans reacted as it is a new chapter in the heated Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes rivalry.

Before his broadcasting days, Kirk Herbstreit was a quarterback at Ohio State from 1989 to 1992. Kirk finished his career with 2,263 passing yards, five touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while also adding 169 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

His playing days are perhaps best remembered for his performance against Michigan in “The Game.” The No. 17-ranked Buckeyes tied the 6th-ranked Wolverines 13-13. Kirk completed 28 passes versus Michigan, then a rivalry record.

The fans' responses to Chase Herbstreit's arrival at Ann Arbor were wild.

"You know it’s bad when the son of a Buckeye chooses Michigan", a Wolverines fan said.
"Way to go Chase! I remember how in 4th and 5th grade you absolutely despised Michigan. It was OSU all the way. Glad to see you've come around!", another fan added.
"We’re just trolling OSU at this point lol", another fan answered.

One fan joked that Kirk was a closet Wolverines fan despite being a Buckeye alum.

"Let’s go! I knew your dad secretly loved Michigan! I’m rooting for you. Go Blue!", one fan mentioned.

Another fan asked if he was the only one who thought it was fake news given that Chase Herbstreit's dad played for Michigan's fierce rivals.

"Anyone else think this was fake for a minute or two?" the fan said.

Meanwhile, a (likely) Michigan fan congratulated Chase for not choosing the dark side.

"Good choice kid. Way to join the good guys", another fan said.

Chase Herbstreit is the most recent Michigan commit in a strong class

Chase Herbstreit is the latest Michigan commit for the Class of 2025. The Cincinnati native is a 3-star prospect according to 247 Sports. A quarterback at St. Xavier High School, he is the second signal caller to commit to the Wolverines, after 5-star prospect Bryce Underwood.

At this point, Underwood and offensive tackle Andrew Babalola headline the recruiting class. Underwood is regarded as the top quarterback in the class, and the Wolverines were able to flip him over from LSU.

Babalola, a Blue Valley Northwest player, is ranked by 247 Sports as the second-best offensive tackle in the class. The Wolverines also have nine 4-star commits so far as they have the ninth-ranked class in the nation.
