Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers shared a lighthearted moment with his former roommate and Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer after the Longhorns' 28-14 loss to the Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl on Friday.
When some fans online attempted to hammer Ewers for joking with an OSU player after Texas' elimination from the College Football Playoff, others jumped in to support the signal-caller.
"It’s called sportsmanship," one tweeted.
"Way more to life than what happens on the gridiron. Lifetime friends who bonded as very young men," another wrote.
"It's a game, and sportsmanship is the greatest aspect of it....!!" a third added.
Some also pointed out that Ewers was Sawyer's roommate at Ohio State and hence, the two share a close bond.
"What’s the issue? They lived together for a year. Great sportsmanship," a fan commented.
"Sawyer was his roommate at OSU. They are good friends," another wrote.
"Watch his eyes. Happy for his friend and then filled with grief," a user tweeted.
Sawyer was involved in Ohio State's game-sealing play in the fourth quarter against Texas. He strip-sacked Ewers and ran the ensuing fumble back for a touchdown to extend the Buckeyes' lead.
While Ewers and the Longhorns' postseason run ended on Friday, Sawyer and the Buckeyes booked their spot in the national championship game, where they will face Notre Dame.
Quinn Ewers gets $6 million offer from unnamed school to enter transfer portal
Last week, reports claimed that Quinn Ewers had received a $6 million offer from an unnamed school to enter the transfer portal. The quarterback now has to decide on his future.
Ewers is eligible to return to college football for one more year for the 2025 season. He also has a lucrative $6 million offer on the table, but it's still unknown which school has made the bid. The offer only exits if Ewers decides against declaring for the 2025 NFL draft.
Moreover, Texas plans to move on from Ewers next season to give Arch Manning the starting quarterback role.
