Shedeur Sanders has had a magnificent four-year collegiate career, split between the FCS-level Jackson State Tigers and the Colorado Buffaloes. He is set to step on a college football field for the final time on Saturday as the 20th-ranked Buffaloes face the 17th-ranked BYU Cougars in the Alamo Bowl.
The former three-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class praised the defense of his upcoming opponent on Thursday. At a news conference ahead of the program's first bowl game since 2020, when asked what he is most looking forward to in the matchup, Sanders said (Timestamp: 2:35):
"For me, it's problem-solving. We know they're going to do a lot of exotic things and a lot of different things that we probably haven't seen on film, but we just got to always stick to the basics and do what we do best. They're a talented team, and they listen to their coaches and they do everything 98% right.
"It's defense, so, defense, eventually somebody's going to bust a coverage, but that's just what it is.
"Watching film on them, it's very hard to find a tell and very hard to find a flaw when it comes to them because the way they go about their business. The way they get in their stunts, the way they're able to move and react different ways and you don't know who's doing what.
"So, they got a great scheme, they got a great everything and I'm very blessed for my final collegiate game to go against that type of challenge."
The Cougars defense allowed just 20.1 points per game during the regular season, ranking 18th out of 134 FBS programs. They also ranked 18th in total yards allowed, while ranking 19th in passing yards allowed.
Sanders, who led all FBS quarterbacks in completion percentage while ranking third in passing yards and touchdowns, will look to cap his collegiate career with a big performance before entering the 2025 NFL draft.
Shedeur Sanders projected to be among the first quarterbacks selected in the 2025 NFL draft
Shedeur Sanders had a big season in his final year of college football. He threw for 3,926 yards, 35 touchdowns and just eight interceptions while completing 74.2% of his pass attempts and adding four rushing touchdowns.
The Colorado Buffaloes quarterback has been projected to be among the first quarterbacks selected in the 2025 NFL draft.
While his draft stock was unclear entering the season, Sanders has continued to prove his doubters wrong. Entering the final game of his collegiate career, it appears that the son of Deion Sanders will either be the first or second quarterback selected in the draft, with Miami's Cam Ward as the only other quarterback who could be picked ahead of him.
