Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke about the real reasons behind the struggles of the Florida Gators. After announcing his retirement in January, Saban has started a new profession in the world of broadcasting and has been making appearances this season as a part of ESPN's College GameDay crew.
During the College GameDay show on Saturday, Saban talked about why the Gators, who were once a top college program, are struggling to find their successful form. He pointed out that the difficulties did not just arise during Billy Napier's tenure but have been building over the past few years.
Nick Saban also stated that the program is failing to adjust itself to the modern college football scenario.
"Well, I think maybe the probem isn't the coaches," Saban said. "You know, they have been through four coaches since Spurrier and Urban Meyer, who both created a tremendous culture of winning here.
"And sometimes the fanbase can just think, 'Well we can show up and expect to win.' And not make the commitment to the program that you need to make to be able to continue to make the changes and investments you need to make to keep up with changing times," Saban continued.
"They should have taken advantage of building better facilities when Urban Meyer was there. What's their collective been like? How have they adapted to this new model of college football? So it's not just the coaches. When you've been through four coaches that haven't had success, there's something else that people should be looking at."
Billy Napier took over as the head coach of the Gators in Nov. 2021. And so far, he has managed a dismal 12-16 record. After last season's 5-7 campaign, his team has been struggling this season as well, winning just one game so far (1-2).
Thus, he is in the hot seat and his future will depend on how the next few games play out.
Nick Saban names the least difficult SEC team to play
On Thursday, Nick Saban made an appearance on the Pat McAfee show. On the show, he declared Vanderbilt the least difficult away game to play in the SEC conference. Saban said that the away team has more fans than the Commodores when playing at their home stadium in Nashville.
"The only play you play in the SEC that's not hard to play in is Vanderbilt," Saban said. "When you play at Vanderbilt, you have more fans there than they have. And that's no disrespect to them. It's the truth. When we played in Nashville, we had more fans, Alabama fans, than what they had Vanderbilt fans."
Following Nick Saban's retirement, Kalen DeBoer is leading the Crimson Tide this season. And so far, they have managed to put up a three-game winning streak. Fans will expect DeBoer to lead the Crimson Tide to an SEC championship as well as a berth in the new 12-team college football playoffs this season.
