Coach Prime's son, Shedeur Sanders, declared for the 2025 NFL draft. However, there have been constant conversations about where the quarterback might end up in the pro league, with rumors that the Dallas Cowboys could select the Colorado star.
On Monday, Jason Whitlock suggested that Shedeur would only join the Cowboys if Deion, a Super Bowl winner with the Dallas team, forced the team's hand to move in for the CU signal-caller. Whitlock also used an example of NBA legend LeBron James urging the Los Angeles Lakers to draft his son Bronny James.
"Here's the only leverage Shedeur has, it's Deion," Whitlock said. "It's like LeBron with Bronny. No one was drafting Bronny other than the Lakers." [6:26 onwards]
"And so, Deion could make it very crystal clear that my son ain't showing up. He's only going to show up to play in a Cowboys uniform. And so the Cowboys can draft Shedeur mid-first round, or mid-second round or mid-third round."
The Dallas Cowboys hold the No. 12 overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. However, it's still unclear whether Dallas will move in for a quarterback in the first round.
Moreover, there are suggestions that Shedeur is a top-10 pick in this year's draft. The CU star boosted his stock tremendously in his final year with the Buffs, recording 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for four touchdowns, leading Colorado to a 9-4 record under Coach Prime's guidance.
Marcus Spears makes case for Coach Prime to take up Dallas Cowboys job
Rumors lately suggested that Deion Sanders might leave the Colorado Buffaloes to coach in the NFL once his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, go pro. Now, ESPN analyst Marcus Spears has backed Coach Prime to take up the coaching job with the Dallas Cowboys, who are parting ways with Mike McCarthy.
“I’m super interested to see if Deion Sanders, Prime Time, is going to get some interest in this job as well,” Spears said on Monday. “We know Jerry loves the flash, we know he loves to bring the attention. No one would do that more than Prime. I wonder if Prime would leave Colorado and take that on.”
As things stand, Coach Prime is expected to remain with the Buffs next season. He has often said that he plans to honor his contract at CU, but it remains to be seen if Sanders will coach the Buffs into the 2025 season.
Sanders signed a five-year, $29.5 million contract with Colorado in December 2022. He has compiled a 13-12 record with the program thus far.
