LSU Tigers coach Brian Kelly, entering his third year, has some advice for the Texas Longhorns on becoming "SEC ready." At the SEC Media Days on Monday, Kelly was asked about what it takes for a school to fit into the Southeastern Conference and the challenges Texas might face.

Kelly used the Texas-Alabama game from last year as an example.

“If you take a snapshot, right, you take the Texas-Alabama game last year and say, ‘well, they're SEC ready,’ right? I mean, they beat Alabama,” Kelly said. “But what happens is the guys in the front row that you talked to that year, they graduate.”

Tigers coach Kelly said that players graduate each year, so the team changes.

“And so in the SEC, it's the ability to fill those seats again, the next year,” he said. “And then it's the ability to play the rigors of an SEC schedule week in and week out. So, I think the medal is replacing those guys and then playing the rigors of that schedule week in and week out.”

Kelly compared it to watching a whole movie instead of just seeing a quick snapshot. To be truly "SEC ready," a team needs to prove itself over a long period, not just in one game.

“So, it's not just a snapshot in the SEC. It's really a long film,” Kelly added. “And if you can go through the rigors of an entire schedule, you're SEC ready.”

Brian Kelly believes in Texas' ability

Brian Kelly warmly welcomed Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC, calling it the premier conference.

“I want to welcome Texas and Oklahoma into the SEC, making this, in my opinion, the premier conference,” Kelly said.

When the media asked Kelly’s take on the Longhorn program, he said:

“Texas certainly has the ability to compete for an SEC championship.”

The first day of SEC Media Days also featured head coaches from Ole Miss, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

Last season, LSU finished third in the SEC East, and Kelly took a close look at the Longhorns’ victory over Alabama while scouting the Crimson Tide.
