Former NFL quarterback and ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes J.J. McCarthy will be selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2024 NFL draft. McCarthy has been one of the more intriguing prospects entering the draft and people have been torn on when he will be selected.
However, in the lead-up to the draft, it does seem like McCarthy will be selected in the top 10, if not the top five. According to Orlovsky, he expects Minnesota to trade up and select McCarthy.
"During one of Michigan's games, I tweeted out, he's going to look awesome as a Viking. One of the things that I have become frustrated with, is people talking about him like he doesn't have remarkable arm talent, like remarkable ability to throw the football," Orlovsky said.
"In the play-action pass game, which is what he ran a ton in at Michigan, and which he would run a ton at Minnesota, I think he is the best in this class when it comes to operating that stuff, seeing the defense, playing multiple personnel and making those difficult throws."
"If Minnesota takes him, he is the by far early favorite for offensive rookie of the year, with the talent they have and the scheme, it is the ideal place for him," Orlovsky said on NFL Live.
McCarthy has been linked to Minnesota for quite some time now, but if the trade is going to happen, the Vikings would need to trade up to select him.
However, Minnesota is armed with draft picks to do it, as the Vikings hold the 11th and 23rd overall picks, which they can package together to try and get into the top five to select McCarthy.
Former NFL QB has questions about J.J. McCarthy
Former NFL QB Kurt Warner has concerns about whether the Michigan QB can be a winner in the NFL.
“If I’m drafting someone in the top five, I want to know that I can trust him to win games with his right arm. We never had to see that,” Warner said on Get Up. “We never saw the pressure on him to have to make throw after throw after throw, week after week, to carry his football team.
"You will have to do that in the National Football League with the way the league is built with the talent at the quarterback position. So, that is a huge question for me because we’ve never seen it.”
Last season, McCarthy went 240-for-322 for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions.
