Jason Whitlock streamed a new episode of his podcast on YouTube on Thursday. In the episode, he talked about several topics, including a request from Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne.
The AD released a letter to fans on Twitter on Wednesday:
"Over the past few years, there have been drastic changes in college athletics. We have been careful during this transitional period to protect our position at the top of college athletics while being mindful to listen, engage and learn from our generous supporters, proud alumni and unrivaled fans to make sure that we protect our great traditions here at Alabama. But there’s a time for talk and a time for action. Now is a time for action."
Byrne discussed the new NIL model in college sports and the challenge of staying competitive with other schools offering multi-million dollar deals to recruits. He requested fans support Alabama to help pay for these contracts, starting with a subscription to Yea Alabama.
Jason Whitlock talked about this request on his podcast and believes it is "a recipe for disaster."
"You gotta cough up the money as we continue winning, you know, we know you buy season tickets, we know you tailgate, we know you buy our memorabilia, we know you buy the tickets and pay for the parking, we need more from you, you gotta foot the bills so that we can retain these players," Whitlock said.
"This is a recipe for disaster in college football, coz schools are gonna start coming with their hands out asking more from the fans and I’m not sure if the fans are gonna be getting more they’re gonna be getting less."
Tennessee has had a similar policy according to Jason Whitlock's co-host Jason Brown
Jason Whitlock's co-host Jason Brown pointed out that Tennessee had already applied a similar policy.
" Yeah I think Kentucky started this, or Tennessee, one of them," Brown said. "Tennessee yeah. So I think it's already out there, it's crazy to me that you're asking ticket olders to even antee up more money. It blows my mind. I don't get it. It's crazy times Jason, it's the wild wild West times 10." (14:30)
So, there is a fear in the college football world that as teams adapt to the NIL landscape, fan experience will worsen.
