The Deion Sanders-coached Colorado Buffaloes fell agonizingly short of a miraculous comeback against the No. 18 Kansas State Wildcats in week 7 of college football, losing 31-28. The impact of the game will be heavy on the Buffs, as they lost two-way star Travis Hunter to injury midway through the game.
On Monday, during a segment of his "Fearless" show, controversial media personality Jason Whitlock laid the blame for Hunter's injury squarely at the feet of the Colorado coach.
"Deion Sanders is the reason Travis Hunter got hurt," Whitlock said. "Because Deion Sanders thinks that he has reinvented football and that he is the greatest coach that’s ever hit CFB."
You know what! I can take a 19-20 and 21-year-old kid with amazing and I can play both ways and play them every snap for a entire season because I am Deion Sanders," he added.
It was not the first time Whitlock had rubbished Coach Prime's coaching methods. Last year, he famously compared him to a 'pee-wee' coach and rubbed salt into the wounds of Colorado fans after the Buffs finished the season 4-8.
Deion Sanders shrugs off Travis Hunter comparisons
Coach Prime and Travis Hunter share the distinction of being two-way players, with the former accomplishing feats of the highest levels in the NFL. His track record proves he is among the best-placed personalities to guide Hunter in his career choices.
However, during his weekly news conference last week, the charismatic Colorado coach rubbished comparisons between himself and Hunter.
"It's not me against Travis," Sanders said. "I had my turn, man. I'm not a doorknob anymore. You can't just turn me on and off like a light switch anymore. I don't do that. Travis is everything. He is 'it.' It's his turn now. I want him to have all the accolades, all the praise, all the love, all the attention and all the focus that he desires. I've had my turn.
"I'm that old boxing coach in the corner that says, 'Left. Right. Left. Right. Hit him right here. Come on over to the corner. Let me tell you this,'" Sanders said. "That's who I am right now. I've had my turn. It's not me against him."
The question of which position Travis Hunter will play in the NFL after the 2025 Draft has dominated discourse about his future, but he has the perfect role model in Sanders to help guide him through that crucial decision.
