Former Michigan Wolverines linebacker Junior Colson was picked No. 69 in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft by his former coach Jim Harbaugh's team, the Los Angeles Chargers.
The ex-Michigan defensive stalwart's selection was praised by James Harbaugh, (the Chargers coach's passionate son) on Instagram:
"National champs ONLY. GO BLUE," he captioned non his Instagram story.
Jim Harbaugh celebrates Colson's pick
Jim Harbaugh was so enthused by the Los Angeles Chargers picking Junior Colson that he broke into the Michigan Wolverines' anthem, "Hail to the Victors," in the draft room.
James Harbaugh had a hilarious reaction on his Instagram stories to the video of his father singing after drafting Junior Colson, captioning it:
"Nice breath control and chest voice!" He wrote.
Junior Colson was a defensive star for Jim Harbaugh
Junior Colson will have the advantage of knowing the defensive system of the Los Angeles Chargers because Jim Harbaugh recruited his defensive coordinator, Jesse Minter who won the national championship at Michigan with him.
Last season, Colson registered 44 solo tackles and 51 assists and was named All-Big Ten second team while winning the Lott Trophy awarded to the college player with the most impact on and off the gridiron.
He was picked as part of a talented trio, including former Notre Dame Fighting Irish offensive tackle Joe Alt and Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
After he was picked by his former coach, Colson sang Harbaugh's praises and complimented Minter's defensive prowess.
"He (Harbaugh) picked me again," Colson said. "He's the best coach to play for. He's a winner."
"He's (Minter) one of the smartest guys I know — if not the smartest guy," Colson said.
Last season, despite breaking a finger bone, he played with casts as the Michigan Wolverines romped their way to the national championship title unbeaten.
After picking Colson, Harbaugh praised the former Wolverines linebacker for his attributes.
“He’s got the size. He’s a downhill backer, but he can also go sideline to sideline. He knows the system,” Harbaugh said. “Big-time competitor. … Size, speed, athleticism. Instincts probably would be the number-one thing for an off-the-ball linebacker to play inside. Tough. I would tell the guys on the team here that here comes another big-time competitor.”
As Jim Harbaugh tries to turn around the fortunes of a team that went 5-12 last season, Junior Colson will likely be a key component in the rebuild.
