Former coach Jimbo Fisher spoke out about cheating and tampering in college football and he isn't holding back. Since his exit from Texas A&M, Fisher has been vocal about what he sees as growing issues in the sports, particularly concerning cheating and player tampering.
In an interview on SiriusXM’s College Sports on Thursday, Fisher criticized the current state of the game:
“We need revenue sharing,” Fisher said. “We need a salary cap, for all schools... and the other part of this, the tampering that other schools do with players, is utterly ridiculous.
“The big schools are going and getting players constantly from other schools, and it’s being done illegally. Those guys are developing players...”
Fisher didn’t hold back on what he calls "ridiculous" tampering by bigger schools, accusing them of unfairly luring players away from other programs.
“The big schools are going and getting players constantly from other schools, and it’s being done illegally,” he said. “Those guys are developing players, and all of a sudden their guys, that team shouldn’t have an advantage, financially, to be able to take care of a guy that another school doesn’t, and it’s wrong.”
Despite his frustrations, Fisher still sees college football as the greatest sport.
“I mean, it’s still so — I love college basketball, all those things, I love all college sports, but college football man, we need a commissioner."
Fisher argued for a fair system that rewards schools for their hard work in developing talent without the fear of losing players to bigger programs with deeper pockets.
What is Jimbo Fisher up to now?
Texas A&M brought in Jimbo Fisher with high hopes in 2017, offering him a lucrative 10-year, $75 million contract after parting ways with Kevin Sumlin. However, less than six years later, Fisher was let go due to underwhelming results on the field.
While Fisher hasn't returned to the sidelines yet, he’s staying close to the game he knows so well. He has joined the SiriusXM college football show "Off-Campus" as host alongside two of his former players, FSU quarterback EJ Manuel and LSU’s Jacob Hester.
The show airs every Tuesday, keeping Fisher in the college football conversation, even if it’s from behind the mic.
