The Ole Miss Rebels, under coach Lane Kiffin, eliminated themselves from contention for the Southeastern Conference championship game with a shock 24-17 loss to the Florida Gators in Week 13 of college football action. The Rebels were firm two-touchdown favorites for the game against the Gators after eviscerating coach Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs 28-10 two weeks ago.
The loss also likely knocked the Rebels out of contention for the college football playoff spots.
College football fans on X roasted Kiffin and his team ahead of the season-ending clash against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Egg Bowl in Week 14 action.
Some fans taunted Kiffin ahead of the Mississippi game.
"@Lane_Kiffin @OleMissFB someone just told me MS state put our game on the Jumbotron last week and cheered when we lost. Just some food for thought," one fan tweeted.
"He's the John Calipari of his sport," another fan tweeted.
"Lane Kiffin missing a playoff due to losses to Kentucky and Florida while beating Georgia…Is the most Lane Kiffin thing ever," one fan tweeted.
Lane Kiffin roasted by analyst
Before the season began, outspoken ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum urged caution with regards to Lane Kiffin and his team being lauded as college football playoff contenders during a segment on his "Paul Finebaum Show."
The Ole Miss Rebels' Week 13 loss to the sub-.500 Florida Gators under embattled coach Billy Napier vindicated Finebaum and on Monday, he roasted Kiffin during an appearance on the "Matt Barrie Show" (1:55).
"I mean he's (Kiffin) got talent all over the field and there just isn't really an excuse," Finebaum said. "We weren't just talking about Ole Miss being a good SEC team. I mean I sat with people Saturday morning and said Ole Miss is the best team in the country they're going to win the National Championship.
"That was not a stretch when they are playing at a peak, like they were against Georgia. So it has to rest somewhere at the top and I blame Kiffin."
Finebaum further questioned whether the Rebels would recover from the season that they had after assembling one of the most talented teams in the country and not clinching a berth in the expanded college football playoffs.
"I know that sounds like I'm just passing a few exit signs but he ultimately is the head coach," Finebaum said. "Lane Kiffin is a really smart guy. He knows this was his shot and I'm sure if you're an Ole Miss fan, you say. 'we can come back'. I don't know about that. To me, it's not that easy for Ole Miss to be the best team in the country which I thought they were yesterday before that game."
The fallout from the season that the Ole Miss Rebels under coach Lane Kiffin produced will continue long into next season with the question over whether the charismatic coach can produce in the season's biggest moments.
