Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed on Thursday that sophomore wide receiver Johntay Cook was leaving the program. Cook is a former five-star prospect, and his exit will only raise interest from programs that can now make a move for the player.
In fact, within hours, Cook has already heard from three top college football programs.
The Oregon Ducks, Georgia Bulldogs, and Ole Miss Rebels are interested in obtaining Cook, Adam Gorney, a recruiting expert for Yahoo Sports and Rivals, tweeted.
All three would be a good landing spot for the former Longhorn.
In Oregon, he would serve as a good replacement for both Tez Johnson and Evan Stewart, who are likely to be in the NFL next season.
As Cook was also originally considering Oregon before choosing Texas, it means that he knows the program already and would be able to easily slot into Dan Lanning's team.
Ole Miss would also be a suitable destination for him, as long as Lane Kiffin's team can surround Cook with suitable talent to help the team make it into the College Football Playoff.
As with Oregon, Cook would be replacing a star player, Tre Harris, but he could be a massive asset to this team on the rise.
Steve Sarkisian is not surprised about the exit of Johntay Cook
Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian has given his thoughts on the departure of Johntay Cook.
“I think, in this day and age of college football, some of that is natural," he said on Lone Star Live. "We try to really pride ourselves on being a heck of a developmental program, and I think that we have some living examples on our roster today of guys that maybe weren’t frontline starters in year one or year two and then developed into really productive players in year three or even in year four.
“I try not to fall prey to 'That’s just what’s going to happen,' but I understand it when it does happen, if that makes sense.”
The five-star prospect has been barely used this season, only making 16 catches for 273 yards, scoring two touchdowns.
Coming into the season, there was a possibility that Cook would have had a breakout season with the rapidly improving Longhorns, replacing Xavier Worthy.
However, Texas brought in numerous talented wide receivers in the transfer portal, such as Silas Bolden and Isaiah Bond, who outperformed Cook.
This reduced his role in the team, and when this happens to a talented player, their exit is almost guaranteed.
