Ohio State had a major injury concern in the game against Oregon with Josh Simmons carted off the field. The Buckeyes' starting left tackle went down while blocking quarterback Will Howard in a play during the game and he is believed to have suffered a knee injury.
After being examined on the field, medical staff brought out the cart to transport him to the locker room, indicating the seriousness of the situation. From the look of things, Josh Simmons might not be able to return to the Big Ten contest in the second half.
He became the second offensive lineman to exit the game against the Ducks after right guard Tegra Tshabola left the game due to injury. Unlike Simmons, he remained on the sideline with no confirmation of whether or not he would be able to make a return to the game.
Josh Simmons' injury comes as a massive blow to Ohio State
For Ohio State, Josh Simmons’ injury is undoubtedly a big blow. The left tackle is one of the most indispensable players on the program’s roster due to his vital contributions and level of experience in the offensive line.
His absence is particularly concerning for the Buckeyes given the significant drop in experience in the offensive line room. While there's a slim chance of him returning to the ongoing game against the Ducks, Ohio State will hope to have him back in action very soon.
Though Josh Simmons was able to stand on his own before being carted off to the locker room by the medical team, he appeared to be limping. He’s been replaced by redshirt junior Zen Michalski, who is now expected to rise to the occasion in the crucial encounter.
Michalski’s on-field experience is minimal, primarily limited to garbage time appearances in Ohio State's lopsided victories. While he was part of the battle for a starting tackle spot ahead of the 2023 college football season, his chances dwindled before the team even reached preseason camp.
Further update on Josh Simmon’s injury is expected from Ohio State coach Ryan Day after the game.
