Colorado's two-way star Travis Hunter was awarded the most prestigious honor in college football, the 2024 Heisman Trophy, on Saturday. He beat out Boise State's Ashton Jeanty, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel and Miami's Cam Ward. Hunter became the 90th winner of the illustrious award after excelling on both sides of the ball for the Buffaloes this season.
Hunter's win led to mixed reactions from fans and analysts alike and on Sunday, Coach Prime's eldest son Deion Sanders Jr. who is a close friend to the two-way star, reacted to some of the negative opinions from fans on X.
"It’s really a lot of b**ch made people out in this world," Deion Sanders Jr. tweeted.
His tweet led to former Heisman winner, Robert Griffin III responding on X with an uplifting tweet.
"Go celebrate this massive milestone with your people my guy. They just trying to drag yal down. If you ain’t got no haters, you ain’t poppin," Griffin III tweeted.
"Yes sir, you are 100% right," Sanders Jr. replied.
Travis Hunter's main competitor disagrees with Heisman win
For most of the season, the fight for the Heisman Trophy has been hotly contested between Travis Hunter and Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty who is having a historical season and is on the verge of breaking Barry Sander's 37-year rushing record (2,628 yards) that he set during his Heisman-winning campaign in 1988 with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
During an interview with ESPN after the Heisman ceremony, Jeanty did not mince his words about his worthiness in winning the coveted trophy.
"I really felt like I should've walked away with the award, but kudos to Travis for winning," Jeanty said. "But yeah, it's simple as that. Work harder, go harder.
"For me, what I've been doing hasn't been done in 36, 37 years, so that's something special. If I keep that up and break a record that's been around for 36 years, I feel like you can't really compete with that.”
Travis Hunter garnered 552 first-place votes against Jeanty's 309 votes and managed a total of 2,231 points against the Boise State star's 2,017 points to barely scrape out in front of the closest Heisman race since 2009.
Hunter led a remarkable turnaround of the Colorado Buffaloes' form leading his team to a 9-3 record from a 4-8 finish last season, barely missing out on a Big 12 Conference championship game. Jeanty meanwhile managed to lead his team to a 12-1 record, a Mountain West Conference championship game, and a first-round bye in the college football playoffs.
Due to the close nature of the Heisman race between Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty, the 2024 race will be remembered as one of the most contentious races in a while.
