Jyilek Harrington, a linebacker at West Virginia State (a division II program), was reportedly found dead in an apartment in Charleston, West Virginia on Wednesday.
According to Lt. Tony Hazelett, Harrington was fatally shot during a home invasion. Multiple gunshots were reportedly fired in Harrington's apartment and in a hallway.
Harrington was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
In response to this news, the university put out the following statement:
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Jyilek's family as they mourn the loss of this incredible young man. "
The university's vice president of intercollegiate athletics praised the late Harrington for his role in the community:
"Jyilek truly embodied what it means to be a student-athlete and was a leader not only on campus but in the community. Jyilek was a young man who, during Christmas, would create a GoFundMe to help less fortunate families."
The vice president of athletics at Carson-Newman said in a statement:
“Carson-Newman joins West Virginia State in mourning the untimely passing of former student-athlete Jyilek Harrington. The Harrington family and the Yellow Jackets’ campus community is in our prayers. News like this is sad to hear anytime, but today it feels worse with two teams who knew him coming together to play.”
The incident occurred a day before West Virginia State's home opener against Carson-Newham, a game in which Harrington, a senior, was likely to play.
The game has been postponed to Friday.
