The tantrum thrown by Alabama captain Malachi Moore at the end of the Crimson Tide's shocking Week 6 loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores is the leading topic in college football world from the weekend. Moore pushed Vandy quarterback Diego Pavia's face into the turf, threw his mouthguard, kicked the ball away after being spotted and refused to be substituted for Bray Hubbard.
Moore issued an apology to coach Kalen DeBoer on Monday and during his weekly news conference, the Bama coach highlighted just how important the safety has been to him and the program after former coach Nick Saban retired in Januar.
“This guy has been rock solid and been a critical critical piece along with others… of keeping this thing together since January. When a lot of people choose, guys chose to leave this guy stood firm. This guy loves Alabama FB. He works relentlessly every single day on the football field. It’s the passion. He is a first-class guy, out in the community weekly," DeBoer said. [8:15]
DeBoer further revealed that Malachi Moore would not be penalized and that the program would instead stand with him during this difficult time.
"This guy (Malachi Moore) plays hard for himself, his teammates and this program means so much to him… doesn’t make it right by any means," DeBoer said.
"What some of the actions were but I just I want people to understand also that he has had my and our back since day one and there comes a point too where sometimes you know as things play out you gotta have your guys back you know as well and understand that we all make mistakes.”
Kalen DeBoer accused of enabling Malachi Moore by analyst
The fallout from the Alabama loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores has continued to grow during the week and former Crimson Tide running back Damien Harris piled-in on the Malachi Moore situation.
During an appearance on "The Athletic" podcast, Harris accused coach Kalen DeBoer of enabling Moore's behavior.
"I'm gonna tell you exactly why he feels like he can act like that. You go and you look at what Kalen DeBoer said in his postgame press conference about Malachi Moore. 'Oh, well he's one of our guys, and he's one of our leaders. Yeah, we expect him to use this and only bring positivity the rest of the season.' Man, damn that!" Harris said.
"What's up with that? Nick Saban would have said that? No! That's bulls**t. That don't help you win games.... That gets you beat against Vandy on the road."
All eyes will be on coach Kalen DeBoer to see how his team reacts to the loss and if Malachi Moore will have a pivotal part to play in the dressing room regarding how Alabama moves forward.
