Following Arizona State’s elimination from the College Football Playoff, Kenny Dillingham has lost one of his players to the transfer portal. Wide receiver Troy Omeire has decided to continue his career elsewhere after being a part of the Sun Devils’ heroic 2024 season.
According to reports from 247Sports, Omeire has entered the transfer portal with one year of eligibility left in college football. He spent the past two seasons at Arizona State, following three years at Texas, where his time as a Longhorn was largely curtailed by injury problems.
Following the official entry of Troy Omeire to the transfer portal, Kenny Dillingham delivered an honest reaction about the wide receiver. His words showcased the keen support he has given his players throughout the successful 2024 season where Arizona State won the Big 12 title.
“Big, tall, fast!!!! Rooting for you! Can’t wait to watch him ball out somewhere!” Dillingham wrote on X.
Kenny Dillingham's unique approach to the transfer portal
While many college football coaches remain stern critics of the transfer portal, Kenny Dillingham has learned to live with it. The coach has developed a unique approach to handling it within his team.
Following the Big 12 championship game victory against Iowa State, Dillingham made it known that he has urged his players intending to enter the portal to do that early. He believes this offers them a better chance while ensuring they remain on the team for the playoff schedule.
"We've met with most of our guys that are going in [to the portal],” the 34-year-old head coach explained on Monday following ASU's Big 12 Championship win. “Our guys have the opportunity to stay on our football team."
“They're like, 'We'll go in (the portal) at the end,' and I go, 'No, that's not fair to you to go in after our run is over. I want you to have the best opportunity to find a spot. You can go in day one right now, we'll help you find a spot, and stay on our football team if you want to stay on our football team and let's go on this ride together the rest of the way.'”
Amazingly, Kenny Dillingham will have a large crop of his players return to the program for the 2025 season. While standout running back Cam Skattebo is out of eligibility, the likes of Sam Leavitt, Kyson Brown, Jordyn Tyson and Chamon Metayer will be part of the roster next season.
This offers the Sun Devils a chance to remain competitive in 2025. After entering the 2024 season as the lowest-ranked team in the Big 12, they went on to win the conference title and secure a playoff spot.
