Coach Kenny Dillingham and the No. 10 Arizona State Sun Devils were unable to overcome the No. 4 Texas Longhorns in the Peach Bowl on Wednesday. However, they kept the game remarkably competitive, losing 39-31 in double overtime in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
It was an incredibly successful year for the Sun Devils as they won the Big 12 championship. Additionally, Dillingham was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year.
After their loss to Texas on Wednesday, Deion Sanders, aka "Coach Prime," the coach of the No. 23-ranked Colorado Buffaloes, congratulated Kenny Dillingham on an excellent season with a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
"Kenny Dillingham, you represented all of us from the Big 12 well my brother. We are proud of u and your team. God bless u all. You’re awesome COTY," Sanders wrote.
Dillingham responded with a three-word reaction to show his appreciation for Deion Sanders:
"Thank you coach!"
Kenny Dillingham and Arizona State nearly pull off an incredible comeback against Texas in the Peach Bowl
Although the Texas Longhorns ended up coming out on top in the Peach Bowl, the game ended up being much more competitive than most people expected. Early on, the Longhorns dominated the game, taking a 14-3 lead in the first quarter. They even scored a 75-yard punt return touchdown for their second TD of the game. They then took a 17-3 lead into halftime.
However, Kenny Dillingham did not let Arizona State give up. As a result, the Sun Devils mounted a strong comeback in the second half. They scored five points in the third quarter to cut the lead to 17-8. In the fourth quarter, despite allowing a TD, ASU scored 16 points and converted on two two-point conversions to tie the game and send it to OT.
In the first overtime of the game, Arizona State scored first. It looked like it was going to pull off the upset, but Texas scored a miracle TD on fourth down to tie the game and send it to double overtime.
Unfortunately for Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils, they were unable to complete the comeback in double overtime. Texas scored on the first drive to set up a CFP semifinal clash with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Despite the loss, this was an incredible season for the Arizona State Sun Devils and Dillingham. It was a remarkable turnaround for the team after having a poor 3-9 record last season.
