Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart has built an impressive resume. Since taking over the Bulldogs in 2016, Smart has led them to two national championships, helping them become one of the strongest programs in the Southeastern Conference.
During the course of his coaching career, Smart got the opportunity to work under Bobby Bowden and Nick Saban. In an interview with On3, the Georgia head coach talked about his experiences and what it was like working under the two legendary coaches.
[09:58] "I was really young with Coach Bowden. ... Ultimate optimist, very positive, joy to be around. ... You know his staff meetings were very unique. I thought they were really cool because we started every staff meeting with a devotion that each person on the staff had to lead. He had some great characteristics that taught me a lot about there's more to life than just football," Smart said.
"Coach Saban, so many things. I spend so much more time with him and you his attention to detail and his ability to focus on whatever the meeting or task was at time. He could go from 11' o clock to 12' o clock on academics and then 12 to 1 was the defensive meeting and then 1 to 2 was the special teams. And then 2 to 3 was the offense and he could transition through those really quickly."
Kirby Smart was part of Bobby Bowden's Florida State Seminoles coaching staff in 2002-03. He was a graduate assistant there while also working on getting his master's degree from the university. He then spent one season under Nick Saban in LSU as the DB coach and another season in the NFL when Saban coached the Miami Dolphins.
In 2007, Smart joined Saban as the Alabama Crimson Tide's assistant head coach and defensive backs coach. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2008 and held that position till the end of the 2015 season.
Kirby Smart has high expectations from QB Carson Beck
Carson Beck was named the starting quarterback of Georgia last season after spending two campaigns as a backup. He successfully led the program to a 12-1 overall campaign despite losing the SEC championship game to Alabama and failing to qualify for the playoffs.
With him returning as the Bulldogs' QB1, Smart has high expectations from him.
"For a first year quarterback, he (Carson Beck) did a lot of great things," Smart said (via On3). "Well, now, this year, you got a lot of high expectations again for Carson Beck and Georgia. So we don't run or hide from the Heisman talk as something that he embraces. We embrace it."
It will be interesting to see if Kirby Smart can be successful in his redemption arc and add another national championship to his cabinet this upcoming season.
