Kirk Herbstreit is a Buckeye through and through. With Ohio State in his veins, the former quarterback has been a forerunner in waving the Buckeyes’ flag post graduating from his Alma mater.

The college athlete turned into a college football broadcaster has lately not been appreciative of the Ohio State fanbase. The Buckeyes’ passionate fan base has been critical of coach Ryan Day and his performance in the recent past.

While Kirk Herbstreit is a passionate Ohio State fan himself, this negative fandom has clearly not sat well with him. Ohio State has lost two back-to-back games against arch-rivals, Michigan. Unfortunately for coach Day, he was at the wheel for both of those losses.

Following this run of poor results in such significant games, part of the fan base has been calling for the firing of the head coach who took up this coveted role in 2019.

In disagreement with the Buckeyes’ ultras, Herbstreit didn't hold back as he called them out:

“That percent is going to be mad at something always. [Day] could win the Michigan game, go to the playoff and lose, and they’ll be mad about that. That group is just a bunch of jack**ses who kind of embarrass all of us as Ohio State fans. So, I don’t really care, honestly, what that group thinks."

Having been on the other side for four years, Kirk Herbstreit probably has had an opinion of the fanbase since his playing days. Adding to his diss, he even said that it was comical for fans to discuss Day’s job.

While Ryan Day has a stupendous 45-6 record with the Buckeyes, the two losses to arch-rivals and the loss to the Georgia Bulldogs have dented his reputation.

Nevertheless, this has always been a part of the sport. Just like Herbstreit said, someone’s going to be mad at something all the time. It’s best for coach Day to treat this as outside noise.

Kirk Herbstreit as a QB

During his glory days, Ohio native Kirk Herbstreit won the Gatorade Player of the Year award shortly before joining the Buckeyes.

A four-year letterman, he finally saw the field during his senior season. He even co-captained the team this year and ended up being voted the MVP for the season. He was also a legacy athlete at the University.

During the 1960 campaign, his father, Jim Herbstreit, was also the Buckeyes’ co-captain. Safe to say, Kirk Herbstreit has enough pedigree in Ohio State football to call the fans out for their negativity.
