During the game between the Ole Miss Rebels and the Oklahoma Sooners, there was a moment where a Sooners player 'faked' an injury.
Faking an injury has been a common sign in college football recently, and something that has been associated with the Rebels more than others.
After this incident though, Ole Miss fans were booing what happened. But these fans see the irony in it all.
"Mississippi crowd booing an Oklahoma fake injury, priceless," said the fan.
"Ain’t no way Ole Miss pissed about Oklahoma 'faking an injury' I’m giggling," said another fan.
"Ole Miss booing an opponent injury is laughable. They should stfu," said a third fan,
These fans also reacted to the 'fake' injury, and some mentioned the Rebels' previous tendency to fake injuries:
"This DT did fake that injury to stop the Ole Miss drive lol. He clearly faked that lol," said this fan.
"Lane Kiffin has no room to talk about players faking injuries 🙄 " said another fan.
Finally, once the fake injury had happened, a squirrel made its way onto the field. This fan saw the funny side of things:
"There's a squirrel on the field, and it appears he just faked an injury near the 15-yard line before finding the end zone. What a sport," said the fan.
What have Ole Miss said in response to the current trend of faking injuries?
The Rebels have become almost associated with 'fake' injuries this season. So much so that a couple of weeks ago, the Rebels released a statement on the topic.
"Feigned injuries has become a notable topic in college football, and we realize our program has been part of that discussion. We have been in communication with the National Coordinator for Football Officiating and provided relevant medical information for his review to answer questions about recent injuries. We have also updated the SEC office, and our head coach will communicate with our coaches and players to ensure we conduct ourselves properly and are compliant in this matter.”
While there is no official rule about faking injuries, it is seen as going against the spirit of the game and generally something that should be avoided.
Ironically, Lane Kiffin, who has been a key figure in the recent injury faking, once asked for a penalty to be imposed for those who fake injuries.
"Really, if you want to change it, let the conference review it, look at the film, and when they deem it to be an obvious faking of an injury, then there’s a penalty, a fine, and I promise you it would never happen anywhere."
Luckily for Kiffin, his suggestions have not been taken into consideration, allowing for fake injuries to still be a sight in College Football.
