South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers is probable to play on Saturday against the Ole Miss Rebels. Sellers suffered an ankle injury late in the game against LSU, which forced him to miss South Carolina’s Week 4 game.
After missing Week 4 and then having an off week, Sellers is expected to not only play but will start for South Carolina on Saturday.
“LaNorris and Rocket were both out there. They both looked good,” South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said, via AtoZ Sports. “Were they 100 percent? I wouldn’t say they were 100 percent, but they both told me they felt great. And they look good, and they’ll both be able to do even more tomorrow, I would think, as well.”
The redshirt freshman won the starting job in camp beating out transfer quarterback Robby Ashford. Despite Ashford leading the Gamecocks to a 50-7 win over Akron, Gamecocks offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said Sellers is the team's starter if he is healthy.
“LaNorris Sellers is our quarterback,” Loggains said during his weekly press conference, via On3. “I will say that.”
This season, Sellers has gone 29-for-53 for 393 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He's also rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns.
South Carolina is a nine-point underdog at home against Ole Miss on Saturday.
Gamecocks OC praises Robby Ashford for helping LaNorris Sellers
Dowell Loggains praised Robby Ashford, who led the team well in the absence of QB1.
Although Ashford lost the starting job to Sellers, he says the two quarterbacks have helped each other. He also believes having two great quarterbacks helps both of them get better.
“Even for helping with LaNorris, when he’s been banged up, Robby’s been in the chair on the opposite sidea of that, as well. So being a good teammate, and even through this whole process before we named LaNorris the starter, when you have good players behind good players, it pushes them," Loggains said via On3.
"As a coach, the bench is your biggest tool. Competition creates pressure, and pressure defines who you are. It makes you the best version of yourself most of the time. So having two good players in that position really helps.”
The Gamecocks are 3-1, with their lone loss coming to No. 13 LSU at home. Following South Carolina's game against Ole Miss on Saturday, the Gamecocks will go on the road to play the Alabama Crimson Tide.
