Shedeur Sanders had a fantastic start with the Colorado Buffaloes. The quarterback moved to Boulder ahead of the 2023 college football season with his father, Deion Sanders, who had taken over the CU program after two seasons in Jackson State.

Taking the quarterback role immediately at Colorado, Shedeur's first game was against TCU. He had the opportunity to announce himself to the FBS world with a superb performance in Fort Worth. He completed 38 of 47 passes for a school-record 510 yards and four touchdowns.

The performance earned Shedeur Sanders his first honor in the FBS. He was named Walter Camp National Player of the Week. This caught the attention of his mother, Pilar Sanders, who gushed over it with a post on Instagram. She captioned it with an encouragement for her son:

Did Shedeur Sanders win the Walter Camp Award in 2023?

Despite winning the Walter Camp National Player of the Week with his season-opening performance in 2023, Shedeur Sanders wasn't the eventual winner of the Player of the Year.

Due to his team's abysmal performance in Pac-12 play as CU finished 4-8, the Colorado quarterback was not considered for the award despite his brilliance.

Shedeur wasn't even named among the semifinalists for the award in November 2023. Quarterback trio Michael Penix Jr., Jayden Daniels and Bo Bix were named as finalists for the award later in the month with Daniels claiming the honor at the end of the regular season.

How did Shedeur Sanders fare after the TCU performance in 2023?

The performance against TCU was a huge one for Shedeur Sanders, and it set the momentum for him for the rest of the 2023 season. Despite the series of challenges, the quarterback established himself as one of the best in the position with his season output.

Shedeur threw for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns with just three interceptions during the 2023 season. He did that despite having to play behind a weak offensive line. Colorado suffered the second-most sacks in the FBS in 2023.

Foregoing the NFL draft for his senior year in college football, he entered this season as one of the nation's best quarterbacks and a projected first-round NFL draft pick in 2025. He was the highest-rated quarterback in the relaunch of the EA Sports College Football 25 video game.
