The number one seeded Oregon Ducks were knocked out of the CFP on Wednesday after their heavy 21-41 defeat to the Ohio State Buckeyes. This defeat is a disappointing end to the Ducks season, who came into the Rose Bowl game with Ohio State with an undefeated 13-0 record.

Speaking on Thursday's edition of the "Pat McAfee Show," former Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban commented on the feelings of Ducks fans after the game.

"If I was an Oregon fan I wouldn't be happy about being 13-0 and playing Ohio State in your first playoff game..," Saban said. "I'm not an internet guy but if I was an Oregon fan I'd be on the internet screaming about that..Living in my mother's basement."

Saban did not hold back in his comments about the Oregon fans, but there is some truth to them.

While the other likely challengers for the national championship (Penn State, Texas, etc.) face easier opposition in Boise State and Arizona State, respectively (though Arizona State would not be an easy game for the Longhorns), the Ducks faced one of the top teams and fellow contenders the Ohio State Buckeyes. These teams had already met before in the regular season, with Oregon pulling off a narrow 32-31 win. This would have definitely motivated the Buckeyes to want to get an even score.

Another key factor was the "freshness" of each roster going into the game. The Ducks had not played in over a month since their Big Ten Championship game win over Penn State.

In contrast, the Ohio State Buckeyes had recently played and registered a 42-17 blowout result against the Tennessee Volunteers in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Dec. 21.

They would do the same to Oregon and advance to face the Texas Longhorns in the CFP semifinals.

Dan Lanning on the Oregon Ducks' preparedness

Ducks coach Dan Lanning brought up the readiness of the Oregon Ducks roster for this game in his post-game press conference.

"We ran into a great team tonight, and we just didn't play our best," Lanning said. "I just don't think we had a good enough plan as coaches tonight. They clicked tonight, and we didn't. I didn't get our team prepared."

Lanning appeared to have taken full responsibility for the loss, stating the lack of preparedness as something that was due to him.

Whatever one can say about this defeat, it can not take away the strong debut Big Ten season the Oregon Ducks had. Unfortunately, and in an ironic twist, a fellow Big Ten side caused their season to end.
