Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy on Saturday beating Boise State's Ashton Jeanty, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel and Miami's Cam Ward to claim college football's most prestigious accolade. In the closest contest since 2009, Hunter garnered 2,231 votes against Jeanty's 2,017.
The win was not without some drama as a clip of Hunter's fiancee, Leanna Lenee emerged on social media during a fan engagement event before the Heisman ceremony. In the clip, Lenee appeared upset as Hunter patiently took pictures with football fans.
“What do you want me to do…I just sit here then,” Lenee allegedly said in the clip.
The video has sparked a lot of discussion about the couple's relationship. This comes after Lenee appeared to snub Hunter's hug after the Colorado Buffaloes' 52-0 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Week 14. Former NFL player Le'Veon Bell joined the argument with a tweet on X.
"he love that girl, probably his 1st gf.. they both young, I’m just HOPING she matures, & QUICKLY .. that’s all I can say, cuz my guy Trav is lost in the sauce .. but we’ve all been there .. at least I have, young and dumb .. I just pray he doesn’t have to find out the hard way," Bell tweeted.
After all the backlash since the clip went viral, Hunter once again defended Lenee in a Twitch stream on his channel on Monday.
"My girl been with me for five years," Hunter said. "Y'all are just now starting to talk about me and just now starting to be with me. Like, come on, man, y'all gotta do something else with your life. Y'all trying to make everything for clicks, like stop that, that's crazy."
"Y'all hate on me, then you go hate on my girl," he added. "I feel the same thing that she feels. We're inseparable. We're with each other. If she's hurting, of course I'm be hurting."
Travis Hunter's fiancee's defiance defended by Shannon Sharpe
During Monday's "Nightcap" show, popular analyst Shannon Sharpe addressed the dynamics of Leanna Lenee's relationship with Travis Hunter.
“I get it. You don’t want the man to be taken advantage of. Nobody does … But y’all don’t dictate anything,” Sharpe said.
“Guys, y’all gotta let the man make his mistakes. He’ll figure it out, hopefully sooner than later. But he loves this woman. This is not an act, and y’all not going to [dictate anything]. He told y’all, he does stuff now to tick y’all off. He told you that. So the more y’all try to pull them apart, all it does is drive them closer together.”
Travis Hunter and Leanna Lenee plan to get married in May 2025 despite the couple's public perception of their contentious relationship.
