After being held to a punt on the opening drive, Louisville senior defensive back Tahveon Nicholson grabbed an interception and returned it 21 yards for a pick-six, giving the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. The two sides exchanged punts before Demond Williams Jr. connected with Giles Jackson for a 40-yard touchdown, tying the game at 7-7.

The two teams exchanged punts before Harrison Bailey connected with Caullin Lacy for a 9-yard touchdown, giving the Cardinals a 14-7 lead entering the second quarter.

Washington forced a turnover on downs on Louisville's next drive before Williams connected with Jackson for a 49-yard touchdown, tying the game at 14-14. Louisville marched 79 yards in seven plays on their ensuing drive, with Bailey connecting with Antonio Meeks for a 28-yard touchdown.

Washington answered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 7-yard rushing touchdown from Demond Williams Jr. to tie the game at 21-21 entering halftime.
