This season's Arch Manning hype started in earnest when Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers went down with an abdominal strain during the Week 3 rout of the UTSA Roadrunners, 56-7. It was the most extensive game time that Manning had seen in college football.
The popular Manning did not disappoint. He went 9-of-12 for 223 yards resulting in four touchdowns while adding a 67-yard rushing touchdown to put the gloss on a highly satisfying performance.
With Ewers out indefinitely, it is time for Arch Manning to shine after being linked with a move via the transfer portal and there have been calls by fans to make him the starting QB for the Longhorns.
On the "Pat McAfee Show," popular analyst McAfee revealed that the Manning family had a different perspective on the battle between the quarterbacks.
"One of my source(s) in the Manning family told me this..We are old school and you never lose your job from an injury..Everybody assumes that Arch is on a fast track to the NFL but that isn't true..He wants to develop and stay in Steve Sarkisian's system #PMSLive," McAfee said.
During his weekly news conference, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said that he would not risk Quinn Ewers for the game against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and that Arch Manning would start in the Week 4 clash.
“Arch [Manning] is more than capable, as I think we all know,” Sarkisian said. “He’s got a lot of confidence from his teammates. [It’s a]idifferent challenge for him, but I know that he’ll be more than ready to go out and play football at a high level for us."
Analyst names Arch Manning 'most popular Texas QB'
Ever since Arch Manning stepped foot in Austin, the battle between himself and Quinn Ewers began with fans regularly asking for the former to be named the starting quarterback.
Ewers was odds on favorite to be the Heisman Trophy winner before he got injured against the UTSA Roadrunners. He has gone 58-of-79 for 691 yards on 73.4% completion resulting in eight touchdowns and two interceptions this season.
In his column, Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt made a huge claim about who is the more talented quarterback, despite Ewers' impressive numbers:
"Saturday not only solidified that Texas is deep and will be just fine if Ewers misses significant time, but it also might have created the argument that Manning is the most talented quarterback in Austin. Ewers clearly has the experience edge over Manning, but you could argue that Texas might not miss a beat without its starting quarterback — one who I believe will be a Heisman finalist later this season," Klatt wrote.
Undoubtedly, the debate pitting Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning will continue, but Texas fans will just be glad that both players are on their team.
