College football is no stranger to celebrity appearances, superfans, and boosters alike. None of those are as notorious as Matthew McConaughey, who is as big of a Texas Longhorns fan as there is.
McConaughey made an appearance at today's Red River Rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners. But he wasn't the only celebrity in the game. Country music singer Leon Bridges was also in attendance.
The Texas Longhorns Instagram page posted a photo of the two getting together on the sidelines.
"just some Texas boys ready for some @texasfootball 🤘," the caption read.
Bridges, 35, was born in Atlanta, Georgia but was raised in and identifies with Fort Worth, Texas. He has generated a successful career in the music industry over the past ten years, highlighted by a Grammy Award in 2019 for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his song "Bet Ain't Worth the Hand."
While his musical style is primarily soul with a bit of rhythm and blues, Bridges has also taken influences from country and folk music.
Matthew McConaughey's history with the Texas Longhorns
Matthew McConaughey, 54, was born in Uvalde, Texas but spent part of his life in Longview. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film.
After graduating, McConaughey starred in many successful film projects such as How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, Dallas Buyers Club, The Wolf of Wall Street, and many more.
McConaughey has been spotted supporting the Longhorns over the years. Former Texas QB Colt McCoy said on The Pat McAfee Show in January 2024 that McConaughey genuinely cares about the football team, as well as other Texas sports.
McCoy also told a story of Matthew McConaughey asking coach Mack Brown to talk to the team before facing USC in the 2006 national championship game. He then sang a song to the team, who were underdogs against the Trojans.
"Somebody don't think so, somebody knows so." McConaughey sang.
The team sang the song all week and went on to beat USC, 41-38, to win the national title.
