Former Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Michael Irvin had a jaw-dropping reaction to the team's 21-point comeback win against the California Golden Bears on Saturday. The Hurricanes had a .6% chance of winning, as per ESPN.
Cam Ward became the star of the show as he threw for 437 passing yards and two touchdowns. The game-winning 92-yard drive buzzed social media and also elicited an energetic reaction from Irvin. In one video, Irivin lies on the floor anticipating Miami's win. In another, he says:
“Miami came into your house, sat at your table, held your wife’s hand, and ate your food, and now we’re leaving.”
Many fans reacted to his excitement.
"I need you as my hype man wherever I go," a fan wrote.
"WHY are you arching like that??" another fan commented.
"And a meme was born," one X user said.
More fans were excited to see his enthusiasm over the Hurricanes' win.
"Great to see you around the U and seeing the program back. Great times ahead," a fan wrote.
"That passion never dies brother," mentioned another fan.
"The playmaker is pumped! Nice to see him with Canes swagger!" a fan commented.
Irvin was a star player for the Hurricanes, who set the school record for 143 career receptions, 2,423 receiving yards (later broken by Santana Moss) and 26 touchdown receptions. He skipped his final year of college eligibility to declare for the 1988 NFL draft and was selected by the Dallas Cowboys as the 11th pick in the first round.
Michael Irvin hyped up Miami players when they played against Virginia Tech
Saturday was not the first time Irvin had reacted animatedly to the Hurricanes winning a game.
The Hurricanes butted heads with the Virginia Tech Hokies last Friday and won the game 38-34. When the team played in the fourth quarter, there was an energetic moment where the former Miami star pumped up the players right before they scored the go-ahead touchdown.
The end of the contest was controversial as Virginia Tech QB Kyrone Drones threw what could have been a game-winning TD to Da’Quan Felton. However, after review, officials ruled the throw incomplete, thus giving Miami the win.
Miami QB Cam Ward shone in the game as he threw for 343 passing yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions.
