Miami vs. Georgia Tech game summary
Despite entering the game as big favorites, the first half did not go as the Miami Hurricanes expected. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets scored a few minutes into the lead from a 17-yard run from Jamal Haynes. However, the Hurricanes got back on track with a touchdown less than a minute later. They added a field goal halfway through the first quarter to take a 10-7 lead.
In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets scored an early touchdown again to take a 14-10 lead. Both teams struggled offensively for the rest of the half. As a result, despite being a massive underdog before the game, Georgia Tech headed into halftime with a 14-10 lead over Miami.
Heading into the second half, despite Miami’s need to get on the board first and take the lead, Georgia Tech struck first. The Yellow Jackets scored a touchdown with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter to extend their lead to 21-10. The Hurricanes could answer back on the next drive with a TD of their own, but a missed extra point meant they were still losing 21-16 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Miami defense did not do what it needed to do to start the third quarter, as it allowed a TD nearly immediately, extending Georgia Tech’s lead to 28-16. Miami replied with six minutes remaining off a 38-yard pass from Cam Ward to Xavier Restrepo to cut the lead to five.
However, the comeback ended there, as the Yellow Jackets completed the upset with a 28-23 victory.
