Sherrone Moore saw his Michigan players get involved in a skirmish with their Michigan State counterparts at the closing stages of the rivalry game in Ann Arbor last Saturday. The scenario unfolded after an altercation between Colston Loveland and Anthony Jones.
Following the altercation, Michigan running back Kalel Mullings was accused of stomping on an individual connected to Michigan State. In response to the incident, the Spartan fanbase and the media have called for Mullings to be suspended by either Michigan or the Big Ten.
In his recent appearance on "Costa and Jansen with Heater" on WXYT-FM (97.1), Michigan coach Sherrone Moore defended Kalel Mullings against the allegations. The coach noted that Mullings was one of the Wolverines attempting to break up the scuffle between the two teams.
"We’ve looked at the film, looked at everything, had our discussions internally," Moore said (per SI). "We saw a lot of our guys being positive. I think there are things out there about Kalel Mullings, he was one of the guys who was trying to be a superhero."
"He was trying to pull everybody apart. I think our guys were doing the right thing.”
The Big Ten later announced that "no further action would be taken" after reviewing video footage of the incident, which was considered "inconclusive."
Sherrone Moore addresses Colston Loveland's post-game comment
Michigan tight end Colston Loveland had a postgame interview with Big Ten Network’s Brooke Fletcher where he answered questions about the incident. In his words, he called Michigan State “little bro,” inferring the popular statement made by Mike Hart in 2007.
Speaking further on "Costa and Jansen with Heater", Sherrone Moore addressed the comment made by Loveland and disclosed how he handled the situation following the rivalry contest.
“We don’t really want to give bulletin-board material, but we also know the history of the rivalry and what it is," Moore said. “I don’t want the kids to play emotionless, but also we’ve got to be smart with the things we say.
“He apologized to me about just that, and even talking to the other guys. But a guy that plays with that much passion and emotion, you don’t want to take that way, but we have to be smart with how we handle things.”
The 24-17 win on Saturday marks Michigan’s third straight victory over Michigan State. This is the Wolverines' longest winning streak in the rivalry series since the Maize and Blue's six-game dominance from 2002 to 2007.
With that triumph behind them, Sherrone Moore and his team now shift their focus to a high-stakes showdown against top-ranked Oregon this Saturday. The undefeated Big Ten newcomer presents as a huge challenge for the Wolverines.
