The Michigan Wolverines, under embattled coach Sherrone Moore, pulled off a stunning 27-24 upset win over the USC Trojans during Week 4 action. The Wolverines' blowout 31-12 loss at the Big House to the Texas Longhorns had deflated fans and confirmed their fears that it was going to be a slog of a season.

Although the first-year coach has seemingly stabilized the ship, the Wolverines are struggling to replace former quarterback J. J McCarthy. He had led the team to an unbeaten national championship-winning season in 2023.

Davis Warren won the starting quarterback job over preseason favorite Alex Orji but they have both flattered to deceive in the role, creating a problem for Sherrone Moore.

Michigan fan and Barstool Sports owner Dave Portnoy has a solution for the Wolverines. During an episode of Barstool Pickem, Portnoy revealed that he was prepared to offer up to $3 million for the Wolverines to buy a competent quarterback via the transfer portal.

“Michigan, I will be your quarterback guy. You just say, ‘Dave, you go [get a quarterback]. I’ll talk to whoever you want. I will sign them $1 million, $2 million – whatever it is,” Portnoy said. “I can get a quarterback. We don’t have a quarterback. $3 million … I’m going to get us a top-10 quarterback in the portal coming out every year.”

Sherrone Moore addresses Michigan QB issue

Davis Warren's reign as the Michigan Wolverines starting quarterback did not last long. After more than a few error-strewn performances, during which he tallied 444 yards, resulting in two touchdowns and six interceptions, he was dropped.

Backup QB Alex Orji took over the reins in the Wolverines' 27-24 win over the USC Trojans and went 7-of-12 for 37 yards. During his weekly news conference ahead of the clash against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, coach Sherrone Moore confirmed that Orji would remain the starter.

"Alex will be the starter again and there's definitely more to the game and more things that we have complemented for him and for the offense," Sherrone Moore said. "But I thought he did a good job, took care of the football for us, which was the number one thing we wanted. And was a great team player, did all the things we asked him. Ran extremely hard when he asked him to, so proud of him and proud of his performance."

Michigan under Sherrone Moore was tabbed to be a run-heavy team but having a reliable quarterback who can pass would help the Wolverines become a more dangerous team.
