The news of quarterback prospect Bryce Underwood flipping his commitment from the LSU Tigers to the Michigan Wolverines made waves in the college football world. Underwood is a five-star quarterback, ranked as the No. 1 player in the Class of 2025, and announced his decision to commit to Michigan last week.
On Friday, Michigan superfan Dave Portnoy, who was key to luring Underwood to Ann Arbor, made a promise to the recruit on X. Portnoy had liaised with Jolin Elison, the partner of billionaire Larry Elison, to put up the financial incentive to complete Underwood's flip.
"Okay this is for Wolverines fans, eyes only," Portnoy said. "Five-star QB1, Underwood #19, the second we flipped his a*s, I got on the horn, let's do a collab. All the money going to Bryce Underwood. I know he's got this huge contract, we're setting the tone, we're setting the tone.
"You come to Michigan, you work with Barstool. We're gonna put money in your pocket as best as we can. We're gonna make this the future, so here we go Michigan! QB1 Bryce Underwood, new era starts next year, so let's go Blue."
On Tuesday, during an episode of "The Barstool College Show," Portnoy revealed how he helped to complete Underwood's flip from LSU.
“I got a call from the Michigan football team,” Portnoy said. “They said, ‘Hey, there’s this donor who wants to talk to you.’ I said I’m doing this (landing Underwood) by myself, and I don’t need to talk to anybody. And they said, ‘Please, this woman is a big fan of Barstool and you; she’d love to talk to you. Her name is Jolin.’ …
"They said, ‘Oh, her husband is a guy by the name of Larry Ellison. Have you ever heard of him?’ Oh, Larry Ellison? Like, the No. 2 richest guy on the planet? Yeah, I’ll take that phone call.”
Bryce Underwood gets support from Michigan QB legends
According to a CBS Sports report, Michigan alumnus and NFL legend Tom Brady was part of the charm offensive put forth by the Wolverines to convince Bryce Underwood. As per reports, Brady promised to mentor the prodigy as he grows into his role.
On Thursday, former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who led the Wolverines to the national championship unbeaten last season, appeared on "The L.A.B" podcast. He also offered his advice to Bryce Underwood.
“I sent Bryce a little text the other day on my advice to him," McCarthy said. "My advice to him would be to chase the suck. Chase the stuff that you absolutely do not want to do. One of the greatest things I learned from the great and legendary Greg Harden was to do everything 100 percent, 100 percent of the time.
"Whether it’s that class you do not want to go to that’s on the other side of campus ... you’re going to do it. Whether it’s that conversation that you don’t want to spend the next 30 seconds in, you sit there and you do that, because that kid, that girl, that guy, whoever it is, might need it."
Michigan's first-year coach Sherrone Moore is getting all the help from former Wolverines legends in convincing Bryce Underwood that Ann Arbor is the best place to be.
