The Michigan Wolverines are expecting to hear players coming off the board left and right and we saw a pair of players get drafted in Round 2 of the 2024 NFL draft. But which players heard their name after only quarterback J.J. McCarthy was selected in the first round from the program?
Michigan Round 2 2024 NFL Draft picks: Full list of player selections from the Wolverines
Kris Jenkins, Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati Bengals chose defensive tackle, Kris Jenkins, to improve the defensive line with the 49th selection. The Cincinnati was 26th in rushing yards allowed per game (126 yards) and needed to replace D.J. Reader so this pick makes a lot of sense.
He has dominated in Michigan at pass rush win rate and also stops the run. Jenkins is one of the best defensive tackles in the entire draft class. Last season, he finished with 37 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and an interception so he can get to the quarterback and be a force right away with the Bengals.
Mike Sainristil, Washington Commanders
Cornerback Mike Sainristil was selected with the 50th overall pick by the Washington Commanders as they look to improve on the defensive side of the football. With some incredible wide receivers in the rest of the AFC North, including players being selected earlier, drafting Sainristil will be a strong way to get stops. He has the ability to defend the slot receiver incredibly well and should be able to do so at a great level.
In 2023, Sainristil recorded 44 tackles, six pass deflections, two forced fumbles, two sacks, and six interceptions. Despite needing improvement in run defense, he excels in zone coverage with an opponent passing rate of 71.8. With coach Dan Quinn, he will be put in a lot of great situations in his rookie season.
