Bryce Underwood took the college football world by storm on Thursday with his commitment decision. The No. 1 prospect in the class of 2025 flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan, close to a year after he gave his word to Brian Kelly on playing at Baton Rouge.
The five-star quarterback's decision comes two weeks before the early signing day. Should he eventually sign for Michigan on Dec. 4, he will become the Wolverine’s first No. 1 overall recruit since the program signed defensive tackle Rashan Gary in 2016.
Underwood's commitment flip garnered reactions from several current Michigan players, including Alex Orji, Colston Loveland and Jadyn Davis. Expressing their excitement at the development, they all dropped a striking response on social media. Here's a look:
Larry Ellison played a role in Bryce Underwood's flip
Michigan's pursuit of the nation's top recruit, Bryce Underwood, received a significant boost from an unexpected source — Larry Ellison. The Oracle co-founder and global business magnate is said to have helped fund the NIL offer that lured the quarterback to Ann Arbor.
Following Underwood’s commitment, the chairman of Michigan Champions Circle NIL collective Nate Forbes expressed his appreciation to Ellison. According to reports, the Wolverines engaged in a high-stakes NIL battle, putting forth an offer exceeding $10 million for the quarterback.
“We are very excited to keep Bryce home in Michigan as he continues to build his legacy,” Forbes said. “I want to personally thank Jolin and Larry Ellison, who were instrumental in making this happen by providing Champions Circle with invaluable guidance and financial resources."
Ryan Clark believes Bryce Underwood is better than recent college top quarterbacks
Ryan Clark has a lot of confidence in Bryce Underwood's talent. Speaking on “First Take” on Friday, the LSU alum, who previously worked with the quarterback, expressed how good he is. He sees him ahead of many signal-callers who have made waves in college football in recent years.
"So what's crazy is that I came out of 7-on-7 coaching retirement for Bryce Underwood," Clark said on First Take. “I coached the team this summer because he was going to be the quarterback.”
“I've seen Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, CJ Stroud, Bryce Young... you name it... Jayden Daniels. At this age, he's better than every single one of them. The way he throws the football, the way he moves, the way he leads, and the sort of kid that he is.”
Underwood could be a solution to Michigan’s quarterback woes under Sherrone Moore this season. The Wolverines have struggled to replace J.J. McCarthy, who led them to the national championship last season.
