The Michigan Wolverines will need a new quarterback in 2024 after J.J. McCarthy was drafted 10th overall in the 2024 NFL draft.
McCarthy had been the Wolverines' starting quarterback for the past two seasons, and now there is a wide-open battle for the job. Entering training camp, there is a seven-way battle for the role. First-year head coach Sherrone Moore spoke on the Michigan Athletic Department's "In the Trenches" podcast about the situation.
"Ideally, I'd like to know now, but that's not going to happen," Moore said, via Fox Sports. "Probably sometime during fall camp. We'll have a couple of scrimmages and put them in those situations and see who manages the team best and go from there."
The front-runners appear to be Jack Tuttle, Alex Orji or Davis Warren. It's likely Michigan's quarterback competition could extend into the regular season, with all three of those players vying for the starting job.
Let's take a closer look at Tuttle, Orji and Warren.
Michigan QB battle
The Wolverines quarterback battle will go through training camp. The Week 1 starter could be Tuttle due to his experience, but he will need to play well to keep the job.
Jack Tuttle
Jack Tuttle is 25 and was granted a seventh year of eligibility. He was the primary backup to McCarthy in 2023, so he has more familiarity with Moore and the staff.
"He's got talent," Moore said. "And we'll see what happens when we get to fall camp."
Tuttle went 15-for-17 for 130 yards and one touchdown last season in Michigan, and he performed well in the games he did appear in.
Alex Orji
Alex Orji has the upside to be a legit game changer at quarterback for Michigan in 2024.
With Tuttle dealing with an injury from spring practice, Orji got plenty of reps, and Moore heaped praise on him.
"He's gotten better every single day," Moore said on the podcast. "He studies the game at a high level, he's a great leader, has the 'it' factor. People follow him. Obviously, he's a superb athlete. He's done a really good job, and [I'm] excited to see where he goes."
Orji didn't throw a pass last season, so there is some unknown, which is why Tuttle likely begins the year as the starter.
Davis Warren
Davis Warren seems to be behind Orji and Tuttle for the quarterback position, but he can be a short-yardage quarterback for Michigan if needed.
Warren hasn't played much, as he threw just five passes last season and didn't complete any of them.
