The Michigan State Spartans traveled to Champaign to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini in a Week 12 Big Ten Conference showdown on Saturday.
The Spartans, two wins shy of bowl eligibility, were looking to bounce back after a 47-10 blowout loss versus Indiana on Nov. 2.
Illinois was also looking to bounce back after a 25-17 upset loss versus Minnesota.
Illinois controlled the first half by outgaining Michigan State offensively and winning the time-of-possession battle.
The Illini took a 21-9 lead into the locker rooms and carried momentum into the second half, outscoring the Spartans 17-7. The Illini clinched a 39-16 over Michigan State, improving to 7-3 on the year.

After an exchange of punts, Illinois scored the game's first points with a 57-yard touchdown pass from Luke Altmyer to Pat Bryant to take a 7-0 lead. The Spartans responded with a 52-yard pitch-and-catch from Aiden Chiles to Aziah Johnson to cut the lead to 7-6 after a missed extra-point try.
Illinois maintained its momentum with a 13-play, 75-yard drive capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run from Josh McCray, taking a 14-6 lead into the second quarter. The Illini broke a 13-minute scoring drought with a four-yard touchdown pass to Zakhari Franklin to take a 21-6 lead. Michigan State answered with a field goal to bring the score to 21-9 going into halftime.
Michigan State opened the second half with a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a five-yard touchdown catch from Nate Carter, cutting the lead to 21-16. Illinois responded on the ensuing drive, kicking a 37-yard field goal to extend its lead to 24-16.
On its first drive of the fourth quarter, Illinois marched 49 yards in eight plays, with Josh McCray finding the endzone to bring the score to 31-16. After forcing a turnover on downs, Illinois punched in another touchdown to clinch a 38-16 win over the Spartans.
