No. 12 Michigan took an early 21-0 lead and then held off a late-charging Minnesota team to post a solid 27-24 win on Saturday. The Wolverines remain offensively limited, but efficient and base much of their success around a solid defense.

Michigan was looking to capitalize off momentum from last week's win over USC as it hosted a 2-2 Minnesota team in league play. The Wolverines moved to 3-1 a week ago despite just 32 passing yards in the game. Michigan's defense and running game have been sticky and kept the Wolverines competitive throughout the season.

As noted above, Minnesota opened the day 2-2, getting edged by North Carolina on a last-second missed field goal and losing in Week 4 to Iowa 31-14. FCS transfer Max Brosmer, tasked with leading the Gopher offense at quarterback, has been rather limited this year.

Michigan vs. Minnesota Game Summary

The Wolverines did an excellent job of utilizing their ground attack and a timely defense which forced a pair of turnovers. Kalel Mullings reached the end zone twice in the first half, as he continued splitting carries with Donovan Edwards. Alex Orji looked more comfortable as the starting QB than the week before against USC.

After Michigan dominated most of the first three quarters of the game, Minnesota clawed its way back into the game at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter.

A 12-play, 76-yard drive bridged the quarters and pulled Minnesota to within 24-10 on a short run. After a stop, a 60-yard punt return by Koi Perich gave the Gophers a short field, with which they pulled to within one score on a second short Darius Taylor TD run.

Michigan answered with a lengthy drive that ended in a critical Zvada field goal to put the game out of reach.

Michigan improved to 4-1 and will travel to Washington next week. The Gophers fell to 2-3 and will host USC next week, with hopes of a bowl bid fading in Minneapolis.
