The Florida State Seminoles under coach Mike Norvell have been plumbing new depths as the 2024 college football season has progressed. After an ACC championship win and a historic College Football Playoff snub last season, the Seminoles fell to 1-9 after being blown out 52-3 by the No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday.
With two more games left to end a dreadful season for the Seminoles, Norvell has topped the list of coaches on the hot seat since a Week 0 loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
During his postgame news conference, Norvell expressed his disappointment at the Seminoles' performance against the Fighting Irish.
"We had opportunities," Norvell said. "I thought there were moments where we had space, but we weren’t able to finish plays. Obviously, for our football team, we all expect better. We understand that’s not acceptable.
“Disappointing performance, outcome—really all three phases got beat. They did a good job in their execution of their game plan, creating explosive plays, and we lacked them offensively. We gave up too many TFLs. Third downs, once again, were a challenge for us.”
Earlier, Mike Norvell had revealed his surprise at how the Seminoles' losing season had unraveled during his weekly news conference ahead of the game against the Fighting Irish.
"I am shocked in where we are. It was not expected," Norvell said. "You look at some of the results that we've faced, you look at some of the circumstances that have shown up. You go into a season and you have a picture in your mind of what things are going to look like. I'm not blind to it. I'm optimistic but I also know challenges."
Mike Norvell accused of "disappointing" season by analyst
During an episode of "Always College Football," analyst Greg McElroy accused the Mike Norvell-led Florida State Seminoles of being the most disappointing team in college football.
"Florida State, there is no one in college football that's more disappointing than Florida State," McElroy said. "Coming in, win season total at 9.5, and to currently be 1-4 with that one win coming against Cal in impressive yet in less than impressive fashion. Florida State is struggling!
"It's their offensive weapons, they have not been able to run the football. You have one of the most experienced offensive lines and they haven't been able to impose their will whatsoever and the defense has been pretty leaky sometimes against the run."
Mike Norvell signed an eight-year extension to his existing deal just before the 2024 season began, which takes him through the 2031 season. Were the Seminoles to fire Norvell at the end of this season, they would owe him $63 million, a figure that drops by $9 million every season, perhaps accounting for the Florida State Seminoles' reluctance to fire the coach.
