"Money ruins the game" "aboutta be good" - CFB fans rejoice as Texas and Oklahoma prep to join SEC

Oklahoma v Texas
The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners are set to join the SEC.

Conference realignment is set to drastically alter the landscape of college sports. The Southeastern Conference is no different as the conference is set to expand from 14 to 16 teams as the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners join the conference on Monday. On3 Sports made note of the upcoming change, tweeting:

"Texas & Oklahoma officially join the SEC tomorrow 👀."

Fans had a mixed reaction to the news. @Set_42_ tweeted that money is ruining the sport of college football:

"When money ruins the game I love 😒."

@Ashton_1nvests had the opposite reaction, writing:

"This aboutta be good"

@GoBucks5240 predicted that it will be a long time before Longhorns and Sooners fans see their teams win another conference championship:

"Their fans should prepare not to see a conference title for a LONG time!"

@saucegardnermvp wrote about what will happen to the Big 12:

"Big 12 got better with them leaving."

@ChuckSportsApp noted:

"Tomorrow is really the end a whole era of college football, it will be interesting to see how this new era compares"

@aidanwestonfb suggested that the stacked conference makes predicting a national champion nearly impossible:

"2024 college football gonna be insane Nearly impossible to predict the national champion with a conference like that having so many elite teams Ole Miss Alabama Georgia Texas Also got LSU Missouri there Yikes"

@martyjo82386200 labeled the Big 12 as dropping down following the departures:

"Big 12 is now a mid major conference."

@TheBestFanInUSA tweeted that the teams will face much tougher paths:

"They better be ready for one hell of a Conference, This isn't the Big 12 this is now the Big Boy Conference."

How many SEC teams can reach the College Football Playoff?

In addition to the massive changes coming due to conference realignment, the College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams next season. The new format will see the five highest-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked teams reach the postseason.

Of the 12 teams that would have qualified under the current rules last season, six will play in the SEC in 2024. Additionally, a seventh SEC program would have fallen one seed short of reaching the postseason. While as many as eight SEC teams can qualify for the College Football Playoff, that remains unlikely. Don't be surprised, however, if close to half the 12 teams come from the conference.
