Florida has been struggling in the last couple of years. The Gators recorded a losing season in 2023 and have arguably the toughest schedule in the 2024 season. How the program will return to the pinnacle of college football remains a subject of discussion in the media.
In his appearance on the “Crain and Company” podcast on Tuesday, Fox Sports sportscaster Tim Brando denigrates the Florida fanbase for their impatience over time. The veteran commentator criticized the fans for not having a good grip on their history.
“Florida is without question the program within the SEC that has a fanbase that doesn't understand or have any context of their history,” Tim Brando said.
"And to me, history always impacts currency and the currency of the Florida program is one of transformation with a coach who's trying to do it in a way to lay a foundation for long-term success. And that fanbase is not built for anything long-term," he added.
Tim Brando believes Florida is not an elite-level program
Florida fans have always placed themselves in the bracket of top programs in the world of collegiate football. However, Tim Brando was not fazed to say Florida isn't historically an elite college football program.
He singled out the era of Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer as the only time when the Gators were an outstanding program in the realm and this doesn't place them at the pinnacle of the game.
“You first thought of Spurrier, then you thought Urban and what have they been when those two guys weren't there,” Brando said. “And yet, the Florida people believe ‘We’re Alabama, we're as good as them, we're as good as Michigan.’ No! You're not. You haven't been.”
Tim Brando claims Florida's fanbase is toxic
Florida is known for its proud fanbase, who could hardly entertain or endure the low time of their program. Brando sees this as toxicity, especially with Billy Napier currently under fire.
“There’s no getting around it, Billy Napier is under the gun. And Florida's fanbase is so toxic” Brando said. “And by the way, I don't mind pissing you off, Florida fans, I really don't. I've said this for years, you have to know who and what you are. When you've been.”
Napier has to ensure something gets done in the 2024 college football season to avoid being potentially fired. He is 11-14 so far in his two seasons at Gainesville and has to navigate a tough schedule next season. This places his future in significant doubt.
