Quinn Ewers and the No. 3-ranked Texas Longhorns advanced to the second round of the college football playoff after defeating No. 16-ranked Clemson on December 21st. They will face the No. 12-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET.
Ewers sat down for a media availability on Saturday and answered questions about the lead-up to the game. One of the questions was about what he needed to do to be successful on Wednesday.
"I think I just need to be a good leader, through the adversity because adversity is going to strike, and just take care of the football," Ewers said. (2:52).
Quinn Ewers' position as the starting quarterback has been a point of conversation in recent weeks
In the leadup to the game against Clemson, there has been a lot of chatter from the media that backup Arch Manning should play instead of Quinn Ewers.
Ewers suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 13 against Kentucky. Although it did not cause him to miss time, his mobility has been limited since then. As a result, some analysts believe the team would be better off with Manning, who is a dynamic runner.
However, in the Longhorns' first college football playoff game, Ewers helped them get a convincing 38-24 win over Clemson. In the game, Ewers completed 17 of 24 passing attempts for 202 yards and a TD. He also had one interception.
Since Ewers returned from his first injury this season, Manning has not participated in games much. However, he is sometimes brought in for specific plays when the Longhorns run plays designed for the quarterback to run.
The team has stuck by Ewers as their starting quarterback. He has proven to be the more effective passer at this stage, and most analysts believe that is what the Longhorns need to win a National Championship.
