Deion Sanders is one of the most controversial and polarizing figures in college football. His personality and antics are on full display at all times, both during Colorado Buffaloes football games and in the national media.

But nobody knows exactly what Sanders is like more than those who have spent constant time with him. Of course, he and his son, Shedeur, have a tight connection through Shedeur playing quarterback for the team he coaches.

But Sanders' ex-wife, Pilar Sanders, came out with some fascinating anecdotes on what it's like to be married to the sports celebrity. Ones that 13 years later don't seem all that surprising.

"It's adventurous, I would say," Pilar said in a D Magazine video from 13 years ago. "It's never a boring moment. The cameras follow us around. We're kind of used to that."

Grappling with popularity

Being married to Deion Sanders requires dealing with everything that comes with it. He has had major success in football and baseball, has appeared on "Saturday Night Live" and has spent time as a commentator on CBS's "The NFL Today."

That level of popularity can be overwhelming. But Pilar embraced it, especially on the couples' reality TV show, "Prime Time Love."

"Our lives really helped so many people out," Pilar said. "And you never really think about that until, like, hundreds of people approach you, and they're like, 'Oh, we totally love the way you handle, like, sex talk with your son or daughter, disciplining your children; we needed to see that.' I think that's what makes it so worthwhile."

Today, Deion is not married to anyone. He had all three of his children with Pilar. The two divorced in 2015.

Right now, Deion and Shedeur are leading the Buffaloes (6-2, 4-1 Big 12) to bowl eligibility and are fighting for a chance to represent the Big 12 in the 2024 College Football Playoff. They are getting set to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-3, 4-2) on Saturday.

Last year was an example of Deion getting attention simply because of recognition as his team went just 4-8.
