This week, the BYU Cougars face the Utah Utes. The Cougars come into this game with an undefeated record, while the Utes (who came into this season as favorites to win the Big 12) have struggled.

This game is also called the "Holy War." However, only a few people outside the two schools know about it.

One example came from Sunday's edition of "College Game Day." During the final part of the show, the panel and guest picker made their predictions for the day's best games.

On the panel was Paul Skenes, a baseball player who attended LSU. His lack of knowledge of the "Holy War" name was picked up on by former Alabama coach Nick Saban in the following exchange:

"Paul Skenes: “I didn’t even know it was called the Holy War until I did my homework before these picks. I did a lot of homework.”
Nick Saban: “Is that the most homework you’ve done at LSU?”
DAMN NICK."

Saban was allowed to respond to the comment hilariously and took it. He is criticized not only by Skenes for his lack of knowledge but the entire LSU Tigers community.

This may be expected on a day like today, as Saban's Alabama will face Skenes' LSU later in a game that will be important for both team's seasons.

Why is it called "Holy War"?

The name "Holy War" used for the BYU-Utah game has various claims.

However, it is believed that it started being referred to by this title in the 1990s after the term was heard on sports radio. The significance of this name can easily be understood.

Both the Cougars and the Utes are based in Utah. The state is known for its large population of Mormons (a branch of Christianity).

BYU is owned by the Mormon Church and is heavily associated with it.

While the University of Utah has no official religious affiliation (it is a public university), many Mormons attend the university.

The shared religions of these schools mean that when these team teams meet, something that they have done on 95 occasions since 1896, it is almost like a "Holy War."

This year, it is very likely that the BYU Cougars will be victorious in this war.
