The Alabama Crimson Tide learnt this week during their game against the Vanderbilt Commodores that College Football is a constanly changing environment, where even the best teams can be defeated.
Vanderbilt have been a program that has struggled in the SEC. For many of the top teams, the game against the Commodores is seen as a free win. This lead those associated with the biggest programs to make comments as Nick Saban did a couple of week ago.
Saban described a trip to play the Commodores (as the Alabama Crimson Tide did this week as):
"The only place you play in the SEC that's not hard to play (is Vanderbilt).”
However, Saban may be regretting saying this.
In one of the biggest upsets of the season so far (and maybe one of the biggest upsets in recent years) the Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the number one ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 40-35 on Saturday.
Alabama never lead in the game, and appeared nothing like they were last week against the Bulldogs.
Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe threw for 310 yards and for one touchdown, as the Commodores were able to shut him down in the run game, with Milroe only rushing for 10 yards. This was something that the Bulldogs failed to do.
As for the Commodores, quarterback Diego Pavia threw for 252 yards for two touchdowns while running back, Sedrick Alexander also scored two touchdowns. In the end, Alabama could not keep up with Vanderbilt, who were not the easy team to defeat as everyone, including Nick Saban, thought they were.
The Vanderbilt Commodores season so far
The 2024 season is likely to go down as one of the strongest for the Vanderbilt Commodores in a long time.
Last year, they lost all their SEC games, a feat that also happened during the 2021 season.
This has been a common sight for Commodores fans, who would have never dreamt of doing what they have done against Alabama. The victory is their first ever over a number one ranked team and the signs were there.
So far this season, Vanderbilt defeated Virginia Tech and took the Missouri Tigers to a double overtime period, only to lose.
They are far stronger than anyone thinks they are, and defeating Alabama has only proved this to everyone.
Next week, they face Kentucky, where they could continue this fantastic season.
