Retired Alabama Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban had an extensive coaching career spanning 49 years and his sudden retirement in January took many fans and analysts by surprise. Although he landed jobs with SEC Network and ESPN as an analyst, Saban has still had to adapt to having a lot more free time.
During the annual Nick's Kids luncheon, which is part of his charitable foundation, Miss Terry, his wife, told a hilarious story about the seven-time national champion coach.
The pair passed through a McDonald's drive-through and when Miss Terry offered her credit card to Nick Saban, he asked:
“They take credit cards at McDonald’s?”
The night was not all about hilarious stories of Saban adapting to retirement. The former Bama coach mentioned his vision for his charitable foundation.
“We’d like to sort of make it bigger,” Saban said. “I always look at the Jimmy V Foundation as something that has been tremendously impactful for pediatric cancer. To continue to try to grow to be something that can have a national impact would be my vision for what we want to try to accomplish and what we want to try to do.”
Nick Saban speaks about life post-retirement
During the Irondale Mayor's Prayer Breakfast a few weeks ago, Nick Saban mentioned how much time his job took from his family life.
In an interview with ESPN, the former Alabama coach spoke about what his life after retirement looks like.
"I can't stand sitting around now any more than I could stand it when I was coaching," Saban said. "I want to stay busy. I think everybody looks at me like, 'This guy's a ball coach and that's all he does.' I've got businesses, I do speaking stuff. I've got my TV job now with ESPN. I like to play golf. I've got tons of stuff to do. So I'm not retiring to quit working."
Miss Terry also did an interview with ESPN where she mentioned what Saban is like after having an all-consuming job for the whole of their marriage.
"He's actually texting and reading his own emails and sent his first-ever email," Terry said. "He even took his first trip to the pharmacy to pick up his first prescription. He's actually quite proud of himself."
Nick Saban was lauded for his coverage of the 2024 NFL Draft and the SEC media days for the SEC Network and seems to have settled seamlessly into his analyst role.
