Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian has been linked to NFL head coaching vacancies, as his team prepares to play the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl Classic.
Speaking on ESPN's Get Up on Thursday, NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed some teams are interested in hiring Sarkisian as their head coach. However, former college football quarterback and now analyst EJ Manuel, doesn't think it will happen.
“We can all get phone calls but that don’t mean you’ve got to answer it, you know I mean? You’ve got Arch Manning waiting in the wings as well,” Manuel said, via On3.
“That’s why I think – look, if you do get some calls from the NFL? Look, Sark coached in the NFL so naturally you’ll get those things. But there’s no way, guys, he’s leaving Texas to coach an NFL team knowing that he has that quarterback. No way, no way no way.”
Manuel believes with how good Sarkisian has turned Texas around he won't want to leave the program. Especially with Arch Manning set to be the team's starting QB next season.
The Longhorns are 6-point underdogs against Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
Insider says NFL teams are interested in Steve Sarkisian
Adam Schefter says no official interviews will happen until Steve Sarkisian and Texas' season is over, but teams would like to talk to him.
“Well I think there are a couple of teams that have some interest in speaking with Sark after the season ends,” Schefter said, via On3. “So, if Texas were to lose this week, then that would free him him up to go do that if that’s what he wanted. And, if they win and go on and somehow find a way to win the national championship, I would think there might be even more teams that would be interested in talking."
“It just looms out there as a possibility that I think there are some NFL teams that do have some level of interest and we’ll see what that translates into during this interview process with six NFL teams currently having head coach openings,” Schefter added.
Sarkisian has never been a head coach in the NFL but he has been an offensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons and a quarterbacks coach with the Oakland Raiders.
He has a 38-16 record since taking over as Texas' head coach in 2021. He also won the Big 12 last year and guided the Longhorns to the SEC title game this year, the program's debut year in the conference.
